There was no way Bryce Harper was going to sit out the Home Run Derby with the All-Star Game being played on his home turf, right? After all, his nickname is “The Showman,” and this is one of the biggest shows for a home run hitter. On Thursday, Harper made it official though when he said he would participate, announcing his decision with an Instagram post.
Harper would accomplish a couple of firsts should he win the competition. He would become the first player to win the Home Run Derby with two different teams and the first to win it twice in his home ballpark. In 2018 Harper was a member of the Washington Nationals and hit 45 home runs to capture that season’s Home Run Derby at Nationals Park. In that battle, Harper beat out none other than Kyle Schwarber.
There are two spots remaining for players in the field of eight participants. Schwarber has not committed to taking part in the derby this time around and has said that he will base his decision on how his back feels. Of the six participants who have confirmed, Harper and Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays are the only repeat participants with Harper being the only former winner among the group. In addition to Harper and Caminero, Jac Caglianone (Kansas City), Wilson Contreras (Boston), Ben Rice (Yankees), and Jordan Walker (St. Louis) have confirmed that they will compete.
The Home Run Derby is scheduled for Monday at 8:00 p.m. eastern time and will be streamed live on Netflix.
Harper and Schwarber are also part of the Phillies contingent of six players who will be on the NL All-Star Team in Tuesday’s game. Harper was chosen by the commissioner as a “Legacy Selection” to participate in the game. Brandon Marsh was voted into the game by the fan vote and will be in the starting lineup. In addition to Harper, Schwarber, and Marsh the NL team will include Phillies pitchers Jhoan Duran, Jesus Luzardo, and Cristopher Sanchez, who is a likely choice to start the game for the National League.
The six Phillies players on the roster are the second highest number of Phillies to be named to an all-star team. In 2024 there were eight Phillies named to the National League team. Six other times there have been five Phillies selected for the game.

The game is scheduled for 8:00 pm eastern on Tuesday, July 14 and will be broadcast on FOX.
