Less than 24 hours after yet another meltdown, Tanner Banks was placed on the 15-day IL with a left forearm strain. Banks allowed three home runs resulting in four earned runs in just 0.1 innings Wednesday night in Cincinnati, pushing his season ERA to 7.14.
The Phillies had sent Banks, 34, to Lehigh Valley in hopes he could get himself straightened out by pitching in Triple-A. Banks pitched 4.1 innings and allowed six runs – three earned – with the IronPigs for a 6.23 ERA.
Right-hander Chase Shugart has been recalled from Lehigh Valley. With the Phillies earlier this season, Shugart was 2-0 with a 4.97 ERA.
Wednesday night in Cincinnati, the bullpen gave up eight earned runs in 4.2 innings of work, allowing eight hits – three home runs, two doubles, a triple, and two singles – and four walks, which means 12 of the 26 batters that the bullpen faced reached base and eight of them scored. They did manage five strikeouts. Fellow left-hander Jose Alvarado gave up four earned runs in one inning of work to send his season ERA to 7.03. Starter Alan Rangel gave up two home runs and three earned runs in 3.1 innings.
