With three pitchers who were named to the National League All-Star team ruled ineligible because they are scheduled to start games on Sunday, three new pitchers were chosen for the roster. Jesus Luzardo was named to the team for the first time in his career, giving the Phillies six representatives on the team. Also added were pitchers Braxton Ashcroft (Pittsburgh) and Riley O’Brien (St. Louis). The three replace Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh), Jacob Misiorowki (Milwaukee), and Max Meyer (Miami) who are all scheduled to start for their teams on Sunday, which would make them unable to pitch in the All-Star Game.
Luzardo, 28, is 7-4, 3.75 in 18 starts covering 103.1 innings of work during which he has struck out 125 hitters. Luzardo joins pitchers Cristopher Sanchez and Jhoan Duran, outfielder Brad Marsh, designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, and first baseman Bryce Harper, who was chosen by the commissioner’s office as a “legacy selection.” Marsh will start in the outfield with the other position players being reserves. Sanchez could be the starting pitcher for the National League, but that will not be announced until Monday.
Many Phillies fans have been outraged by the fact that Zack Wheeler has not been chosen as an all-star, but like Skenes, Misiorowski, and Meyer, Wheeler is scheduled to start on Sunday. Once he was not chosen initially, the odds of him being chosen as a replacement are slim. The commissioner could have chosen him as the legacy selection as somewhat of an honorary choice since that selection does not count toward the roster limit for the game.
The game is scheduled for Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park.
