The Phillies turned to the Chicago White Sox to help their thin outfield situation, acquiring Derek Hill for a pair of minor league players. In the deal, the Sox are also sending $250-thousand of international slot money to Philadelphia, something that Dave Dombrowski has stockpiled in a number of deals this season.

Derek Hill is a right-handed hitter whose numbers scream platoon player. Against left-handed pitching this season, the 30-year-old is hitting .245/.298/.491/.789 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 53 at-bats. Meanwhile, he is just a .148 hitter against right-handers. In 50 games with the Sox this season, Hill had hit four home runs and driven in eight runs with a slash line of .213/.284/.375/.659.

Hill is an above average outfielder with a solid arm. He has played primarily in center field, but can also play at both corner outfield spots as well.

Now in his seventh major league season, the Phillies are Hill’s seventh team. He has played previously for Detroit, Washington, Texas, San Francisco, and Miami before joining Chicago last season.

Chicago gets outfielder Derek Campbell and infielder Jose Colmenares from Philadelphia.

Campbell, who turns 24 in three weeks, opened eyes in the Arizona Fall League when he hit 4-16-.304/.419/.625/1.044 in 19 games, but has reverted to more typical numbers this season with Reading where he had played in 55 games with a slash line of 7-31-.216/.281/.412/.693 for the Fightins.

Colmenares, 24, was playing at Jersey Shore, batting .278/.403/.413/.816 with three home runs and 19 RBI in 36 games for the BlueClaws.

The Phillies outfield situation was already thin, but with this week’s news of Johan Rojas being lost for the season with a torn UCL and Adolis Garcia leaving Wednesday’s game with an apparent arm/shoulder injury, the depth chart has grown especially thin.

Reports are that the Phillies and White Sox have been talking for a while about a potential deal and that the trade was not a reaction to either of the recent injuries. It’s likely though that those injuries may have lit a bit of a fire under the Phillies to make a deal.
