As he was picking up the pace of his workouts to return to the field after an 80-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, Johan Rojas ran into another problem; an elbow injury. The outfielder was diagnosed with a torn Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) in his right (throwing) shoulder. The Phillies announced Wednesday that the 25-year-old will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair the ligament and will miss the rest of the 2026 season.
Major League Baseball suspended Rojas back on March 16 when he tested positive for Boldenone, which is a performance enhancing substance that is banned by MLB. The suspension cost Rojas the first 80 games of the season which left him eligible to return to the majors on June 25. MLB rules allow a suspended player to begin a “rehab” assignment in the minors 15 days prior to being eligible to play, which would have put him back on the field this week.
The Phillies hope to have Rojas ready to go by Spring Training next year to compete for a roster spot. In 250 major league games, Rojas is a .252 hitter with six home runs, 73 RBI and 51 stolen bases, all with the Phillies.
