It certainly looks like Adolis Garcia will be making a trip to the IL very soon. After making one of his laser-like throws, Garcia instantly grabbed his right arm in obvious pain. Garcia then exited the game in favor of Steward Berroa and will be further examined today.

Garcia is batting just .195 this season and is hitting .219 in the month of June. He has hit three home runs in the last seven games and now has seven home runs on the season. Defensively, Garcia has come up big for the Phillies both with his glove and arm, having thrown out four runners on the basepaths.

The Phillies have been deploying a platoon in center field recently with Justin Crawford being limited in playing time against left-handed pitchers. Throughout the minors, Crawford – a left-handed hitter – had good production against lefties, but is hitting just .143 (4-28) against southpaws this season. Interim manager Don Mattingly has started Crawford four times in the last 13 games when the Phillies faced a left-handed pitcher.

Brandon Marsh is having a career year for the Phillies, hitting .326/.361/.504/.865 with eight home runs. Phillies outfielders rank 30th in the majors in WAR this season.

The options

There aren’t many options on the open market. In trades, there may be some viable options, but teams are reluctant to give up right-handed hitting outfielders. For some reason, there simply are not many right-handed outfielders these days in the game of baseball.

As for internal options, there aren’t many. It’s likely that the Phillies will put Otto Kemp at the top of the list. The Phillies optioned Kemp to Lehigh Valley earlier this season when he was hitting .080/.148/.080/.228 in 13 games for the team coming off of the bench. In 33 games with the IronPigs, Kemp is hitting 4-26-.214/.307/.376 playing in left field and third base primarily. He has also seen a little time at first base.

Felix Reyes delivered a three-run HR in the top of the ninth to give Lehigh Valley a 4-3 lead in Scranton.

Gabriel Rincones Jr. is off of the IL and returned to the IronPigs and he is a right fielder. He is also another left-handed hitter. With the IronPigs this season, Rincones has played 12 games with no home runs and five RBI to go along with a slash line of .239/.345/.283/.628.

The best option at Lehigh Valley is Felix Reyes, who the Phillies had in the majors for a short time earlier in the year. You may remember that Reyes homered in his first major league at-bat and was promptly buried on the bench. He ended up with 12 major league games on his resume and hit .158 with the Phils. This season with Lehigh Valley, Reyes has 14 home runs and 37 RBI with a slash line of .303/.328/.624/.952. Reyes is the defending Eastern League MVP and batting champion, who hit .335/.365/.572/.937 with Double-A Reading.

The 25-year-old needs to be in the lineup. He is not seasoned enough to be able to play a bench role and be expected to deliver only via pinch-hitting opportunities. That’s the mistake that the Phillies have made with Reyes, Kemp, and now with Steward Berroa.
