The Schwarbombing of the Mets took place Saturday night in South Philadelphia. Kyle Schwarber hit three home runs for the Phillies, two of them coming in the second inning. Schwarber drove in six runs for the Phillies on the night, while teammate Bryce Harper drove in three runs and hit for the cycle, launching his 16th home run of the season.
Schwarber and Harper were a combined .800 (8-10) with a double, a triple, four home runs, nine RBI, six runs scored, two home runs (both over 450 feet) in the same inning, and with Harper hitting for the cycle.
Schwarber’s pair of third inning home runs totaled 913 feet – one at 456, the other at 457 – and landed a foot away from each other. The Phillies won the game 15-3, hitting former Milwaukee starter Freddie Peralta for 10 runs in just 2.2 innings.
Meanwhile, the Mets were handed the problem of trying to catch up against Cristhian Sanchez, one of the better pitchers in the NL and a serious candidate for the league’s Cy Young award. Sanchez got the win and threw 6.0 innings, allowed one earned runs on five hits while giving up one walk and fanning five hitters. Max Lazar threw two innings and allowed two earned runs while jhoan Duran pitched the ninth and gave up a hit, bu nothing else. While it was not a save situation, of course, Duran had not pitched in a while and was brought in to get some work.
