Jacob Misiorowski may be a very nice guy, but last night, he was nasty. The Phillies managed just one hit off of the 24-year-old right-hander – a Kyle Schwarber single in the fourth inning – and he was erased on a double-play. On his way to a 6-0 complete game shut-out, The Miz struck out eight of the first nine hitters he faced, with an Alec Bohm groundball to short being the only exception; Misiorowski went on to strike out a career-high 15 in the game and faced the minimum number of hitters in the process.

The Brewers ace is now 8-2 with a 1.34 ERA in 14 starts this season. He has a WHIP of 0.74 and opponents are batting just .140 against him. He and Cristopher Sanchez are considered the clear front-runners for the NL Cy Young award. Sanchez will pitch in Milwaukee on Sunday, hoping to keep pace with the young righty in the race.

As for the Phillies, they went with Tanner Banks as an opener hoping to change things up enough to get rookie Andrew Painter going. The idea sprang from earlier this season when Painter had a migraine pre-game and entered the game later only to wind up having one of his best outings. Unfortunately, it didn’t work. Banks gave up a first inning run when William Contreras doubled to drive in Christian Yelich, who led off the game with a walk.
Painter entered in the second and the Brewers used some small-ball techniques to get a run on the board against him. Garrett Mitchell led off with an infield single and David Hamilton bunted him over to second. A groundball out by Joey Ortiz moved Mitchell to third and he scored on a wild pitch by Painter. The ball never left the infield in the inning, but Milwaukee was up 2-0.
For a while, it looked like the idea of an opener might work. Painter made it through the third and fourth innings without any damage and got the first two outs in the fifth before he gave up a double to Brice Turang, who then stole third. Contreras walked and Jake Bauers hit his 13th home run of the season to put the Brewers up 5-0. Painter gave up another run in the sixth before being replaced by Chase Shugart, who allowed a two-out single, but nothing else in his inning of work. Tim Mayza allowed a one-out double in the eighth, but didn’t allow any further damage.
Gabriel Rincones Jr. had the challenge of facing Misiorowski for his major league debut. The Phillies recalled Rincones earlier in the day to replace Adolis Garcia, who went on the 60-day IL with a lat tear in his right arm. Rincones struck out twice against Misiorowski and also grounded to first in the ninth.
