The news on Adolis Garcia was certainly not what the Phillies wanted to hear. Garcia suffered a torn lat muscle in his right arm and was placed on the 60-day IL on Friday. The move necessitated an addition to the roster and right fielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. was recalled. Rincones was already on the 40-man roster and is in Friday night’s lineup to face Jacob Misiorowski and the Milwaukee Brewers.
Garcia left Wednesday night’s game after firing a throw in from right field attempting to throw out a runner. It was anticipated that he would be placed on the IL and Rincones Jr. was not in the Lehigh Valley starting lineup on Thursday. Garcia was hitting just .195 with seven home runs and 21 RBI.
While Garcia could potentially return in mid-August, he is not expected to return to the field this season. The Phillies had signed him to a one-year, $10-million contract during the offseason. He replaced Nick Castellanos in right field with the Phillies hoping that his offense would return to the form that he showed with the 2023 Texas Rangers. Since then, Garcia had not shown much offense at the plate and the Phillies hoped that the change of scenery and working with hitting coach Kevin Long would help.
Rincones, 25, was sidelined in spring training with knee inflammation. The Phillies had hoped Rincones would be competing for a roster spot, but was unable to play in any games. After rehab stops with Clearwater and Jersey Shore, Rincones returned to Lehigh Valley and was hitting.239/.345/.283/.628 with no home runs and five RBI in 12 games.
It was during spring training in 2025 when Rincones put himself on the map as a prospect with a big offensive output. He followed that up with career highs in home runs (18) and RBI (73) last season with Lehigh Valley. He also hit .240/.370/.430/.800 with the IronPigs, which garnered the Phillies beliefs that he could battle for a roster spot this season.
Interim manager Don Mattingly said that Rincones and newly acquired Derek Hill would platoon in right field. The Phillies acquired Hill on Thursday from the White Sox. He was batting.213 with Chicago this season and is known primarily for his defense and for his ability to hit left-handed pitching.
