Remember the names Tanner Gresham, Marty Gair, and Gabe Craig. Those three pitchers joined forces to throw a no-hitter against the St. Lucie Mets Wednesday in a 2-0 win. Clearwater also took game two of the doubleheader 5-3 for a sweep of the Mets and a season record of 33-20. The sweep puts the Threshers three games ahead of Fort Myers in the FSL West standings.
Gresham threw five near-perfect innings with the only blemish being a leadoff walk to Elian Pena to start the game. Gresham, 24, retired the next 15 hitters and struck out eight of them to get the win, his first of the season against three losses.
A two-run single by Alirio Ferrebus broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth.
Gair entered to open the bottom of the sixth and recorded one strike out in his clean inning of work. Craig pitched the seventh and after striking out the first two hitters, issued a walk to Randy Guzman before coming back to strike out Yohairo Cuevas to finish the game and preserve the no-hit effort.
The Phillies signed Gresham as a minor league free agent in August of 2024. He pitched for Army and went undrafted leaving him to sign with the independent Trenton Thunder where he pitched until being picked up by the Phillies. Gresham has a 3.53 ERA with 19 walks and 44 strikeouts in 35.2 innings this season.
The 22-year-old Gair was selected in the 13th round of the 2023 Draft out of Florida Southwest Junior College. In two professional seasons with 39 relief appearances, Gair has a 5.00 ERA.
The Phils used their fifth round pick in last year’s draft to select Craig, who pitched collegiately at Baylor. Craig turns 25 on July 3 and is 2-0, 3.52 in 21 relief appearances since being drafted. This season he has three saves in four opportunities.
In game two, Clearwater scored four runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-3 win. The Threshers took two St. Lucie errors and turned them into four unearned runs for the win. Earlier in the game, Jaeden Calderon homered for the second time this season to take an early 1-0 lead. St. Lucie came back with two runs in the fifth and after giving up the four runs in the top of the seventh, they put a run on the board in the bottom of the inning.
Brian Walters (4-2) got the win with two innings in relief. Walters put the Mets down 1-2-3 in the sixth before running into issues in the seventh.
