The Florida Coast League announced their player and pitcher of the week and another member of the Clearwater Threshers was honored with the Player of the Week honor. Robert Phelps was given the honor for the week of May 25-31.

Phelps became the fourth member of the Threshers to win the POTW award this season. In six games against Dunedin, Phelps hit .407 (11-27) with two home runs, two doubles, 10 runs scored, and seven RBI. The 10 runs scored are the most by any Threshers’ player in a series this season. On Thursday, Phelps showed a flair for the dramatic when he singled to left to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th. The single was his third hit of the game, which he also accomplished two days later with a 3-4 day at the plate.

The big series upped Phelps’ average from .245 at the start of the six games to .278 when it was over. So far, this week is off to a good start as Phelps has three hits in the first two games of a series against St. Lucie, which now has his season average at .286. In 40 games this season, Phelps has a slash line of .286/.414/.443/.857 with four home runs and 17 RBI. Including his two games this week, Phelps now has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games.

Phelps, 22, was drafted by the Phillies in the 19th round of last year’s draft out of Allderice High School in Pittsburgh. In 50 minor league games, Phelps has played 21 games at second base, 19 at third, and 10 at shortstop, which was his primary position coming out of high school.

The Threshers are 33-20 (.623) this season and lead the FSL West by three games over Ft. Myers. Clearwater has won their last four games and eight of their last 10.
