All it took was for Rob Thomson to lose his job and the Phillies instantly look like they’re a “really good club,” as Dave Dombrowski is proud of saying. In Don Mattingly‘s first game as the team’s manager, the Phillies played their best game of the season in beating the visiting San Francisco Giants 7-0.
Trea Turner had his first multi-hit game in over two weeks with a 4-for-5 night and scored two runs in the game. On the mound, Jesus Luzardo, who came into the game with a 6.91 ERA became the first Phillies starter to go seven innings this season. He allowed just two hits and didn’t walk a batter while striking out eight in his seven shutout innings. His ERA dropped to 5.50 and he is now 2-3 on the season.
The Phillies started the day by firing manager Rob Thomson and spent the middle of the day parading Dombrowski, interim manager Don Mattingly, Bryce Harper, and even Thomson in front of the media.
When game time came around, Luzardo went out and retired the first six hitters and 10 of the first 11. After a fourth inning double by Luis Arraez, Luzardo then set down the final 11 hitters he faced; 66 of his 82 pitches were for strikes. Orion Kerkering and Tim Mayza both threw a perfect inning in relief and both struck out two hitters to lock down the win.
In addition to Turner’s four hits, both Harper and Alec Bohm had two hits and both delivered an RBI double. Adolis Garcia went 1-for-3 with a two-run double and a run scored. The Phillies collected 11 hits, three of them were doubles.
Still number 30
The Mets shutout Washington to keep the Phillies tied with New York at 10-19 on the season. The two teams, who are among the top four teams in player payroll in the majors, are tied for the worst record in the majors.
Atlanta continues to win as they beat Detroit 5-2. The Phillies and Mets are both 10.5 games behind Atlanta, who have a seven game lead over Miami and an eight game lead over Washington in the NL East.
In the minors…
Chris Adamson took over the reins at Lehigh Valley when manager Anthony Contreras was promoted to be the Phillies third base coach. The IronPigs opened a series in Syracuse (NY Mets) and lost 10-4. It was Adamson’s debut as a Triple-A manager after serving as Lehigh Valley’s bench coach under Contreras.
Also last night, Reading lost to the Hartford Yard Goats 3-1. Jersey Shore fell to Hudson Valley 9-5, but Brady Day stayed hot with his fourth home run in four games. The Clearwater Threshers beat Palm Beach 7-3 behind a grand slam by Jaeden Calderon.
