The Phillies have added a pair of players to bring their September roster to the full 28 allotted by Major League Baseball. Catcher Rafael Marchan, who had been on a rehab assignment with the IronPigs, and right-hander Grant Holman were added to the roster and are eligible to play against the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight.
Marchan was on the IL with left knee tendinitis and started a rehab assignment with Lehigh Valley on August 13. The switch-hitting catcher hit .189/.279/.189/.468 on the rehab assignment in 11 games. With the Phillies prior to the injury the 27-year-old was hitting .102/.141/.170/.311 in the majors.
With Lehigh Valley Marchan was 10-for-13 for a 77-percent success rate in ABS challenges. In the majors this season he has stopped 31.3-percent of attempted base stealers (5-for-16) this season and his five Defensive Runs Saved rank seventh among National League catchers with at least 200.0 innings caught.
The 26-year-old Holman pitched well with Lehigh Valley after being claimed on waivers and coming over from Toledo, the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. As an IronPig, he ranked seventh in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.00) and eighth in WHIP (1.04) among International League relievers with at least 20 games to their credit. He was 3-0 with a 3.12 ERA in 26 innings with 25 strikeouts and just five walks in 20 relief outings. He held IL hitters to just a .182/.234/.250/.484 slash line this season.
Holman pitched for the Athletics in the majors in each of the past two seasons and went 5-3 with a 4.66 ERA, 33 strikeouts and 18 walks in 38 relief appearances and two starts.
The Phillies still have left-hander Tanner Banks at Lehigh Valley on a rehab assignment, but he is not eligible to be activated until September 7. In two rehab outings Banks has thrown two perfect innings and has struck out five of the six batters he has faced. He struggled in four other outings with the IronPigs prior to the injury when he allowed three earned runs in 4.1 innings of work for a 6.23 ERA.
