You may not know the name Steward Berroa, but he is the newest member of the Phillies organization. The Phillies added him to the mix on Wednesday when they purchased his contract from the Brewers. Berroa had to be placed on the 40-man roster, but was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He is scheduled to report to the IronPigs, who are playing at home this week, on Friday.

To make room for Berroa on the 40-man roster pitcher Yoniel Curet was designated for assignment. Curet had been acquired from Tampa Bay in exchange for Tommy McCollum.

Berroa is known for his speed and strong defensive skills more than he is for offense. He has played parts of two seasons in the majors, playing for Toronto in 28 games in 2024. Last season he played in two games with Milwaukee. He has a combined stat line of 0-1-.167/.314/.190/.504 in those two seasons. In 180 Triple-A games he has 12 home runs and has driven in 77 runs while scoring 115 runs. His Triple-A slash line with Nashville, Buffalo, and Oklahoma City is .255/.353/.373/.726 in 180 games. In his short major league career, he has stolen seven bases in nine attempts.

Berroa, 26, was born in the Dominican Republic and signed as an international free agent with Toronto in 2016. The switch-hitting outfielder has just returned from a shoulder injury but is reported to be healthy now and played in two games for Triple-A Nashville.

Curet, 23, was originally sent to Double-A Reading to open the season, but did not appear in a game with the Fightins before being moved down to Clearwater. He also had not appeared in a game with the Threshers and will now need to let the DFA process play out before rejoining a team and there are no guarantees that he will remain in the Phillies organization.

Lehigh Valley is hosting Rochester (Nationals) this week and have dropped the first two games of the series. Zack Wheeler pitched his second rehab game Wednesday night and threw 4.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out six hitters.
