On Tuesday, Lehigh Valley IronPigs manager Anthony Contreras, who should have top prospect Aidan Miller on his roster, told reporters that Miller had started taking some groundballs, but was not sure if he had been participating in any other “baseball activities.” The next day, Phillies president Dave Dombrowski confirmed that Miller has begun swinging a bat as he rehabs from lower back stiffness in Clearwater.
Todd Zolecki if MLB.com first reported Miller’s progress.
“It’s just the next step in his progress,” Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said before Wednesday’s series finale against the Giants at Oracle Park. “It’s step by step daily. I can’t tell you what he did today, for example. But yes, he has started to swing the bat.”
The Phillies are being cautious with Miller who first missed time late last season when he sat out the last three games of the Triple-A season. They also took him off of the roster for the Arizona Fall League and replaced him with Bryan Rincon. Miller also was unable to take part in any drills this spring in Clearwater.
Dombrowski told Zolecki that the team and Miller are both happy with the progress that Miller has made and that they are optimistic about his long-term health and his ability to live up to his billing as the team’s top prospect. Because they are being so cautious, the Phillies have not set a timetable for him to officially begin his 2026 season.
Miller is an important piece of the future for the Phillies. He will likely move from his usual shortstop position to third base in anticipation of Alec Bohm becoming a free agent at the end of the season.
