Tim Mayza put up the best numbers of his career this past season with the Phillies. The 34-year-old and the Phillies have agreed to a one-year $2.75-million deal for the 2027 season, a nice raise over the $1.75-million he earned last season. Mayza was eligible to become a free agent.
Mayza posted a personal high 67.1 innings in 2026 with a 3.48 ERA and was one of the few dependable pitchers in the bullpen for Don Mattingly, who had his interim manager label removed a day prior to Mayza re-signing. Mayza also posted above average numbers for strikeouts (23.6% strikeout rate), walks (6.6% walk rate), and ground balls (48.1% ground ball rate).
Another improvement that Mayza made in 2026 was to increase his effectiveness against right-handed hitters. Last season righties produced a .302 wOBA against Mayza compared to a career .340 wOBA against them.
Mayza was born in Allentown, PA which is now home to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Phillies Triple-A affiliate, and he collegiately at nearby Division 2 Millersville University. The Phillies added Mayza in August of 2025 on a waiver claim from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He had previously pitched seven seasons for Toronto before being released in July of 2024 and claimed by the Yankees. After 15 games with New York he became a free agent and signed with Pittsburgh.
Mayza made six appearances as an opener for the Phillies this past season, which were the only starts he has made in his career to go with 436 relief appearances. He has a career mark of 23-13 with a 3.80 ERA.
