The Surprise Saguaros are not afraid to be behind late in a game. On Thursday, it was a four-run bottom of the eighth that gave them a 9-8 win over the Peoria Javelinas. Aidan Miller had an RBI single and then scored on a two-run single by Reading teammate Aroon Escobar in the eighth inning, and a pair of Phillies relievers threw 4.1 innings of shutout ball.
Ryan Dromboski threw three shutout innings, giving up a hit and walking three while also striking out three. All three of the walks came in his first inning of work with one of the runners being thrown out attempting to steal by Phillies catching prospect Kehden Hettiger. The only hit he allowed was a leadoff double in the fifth, but Dromboski stranded the runner at second with two strikeouts and an infield pop-up. The 23-year-old has now thrown 6.1 shutout innings for the Saguaros in two appearances.
Keegan Batka came on with two outs in the second inning and got the final out. In the third he gave up a walk and a hit, but was victimized by two errors that gave Peoria two unearned runs in the inning. In all, he threw 1.1 innings with one walk, one hit and one strikeout. Batka’s ERA fell to 6.00 on the season.
Escobar drove in a run earlier in the game on a sacrifice fly to score Casey Cook (Texas) from third. Escobar finished the day 1-for-2 with two walks and the sacrifice fly. Escobar is now batting .214 (2-for-14) on the season.
Miller was 1-for-2 and picked up three of the 10 walks issued by Javelinas pitchers. In five games, Miller is now batting .500 (7-for-14) with three runs scored, two doubles, a triple, and three RBI. He has drawn 10 walks while only striking out 5 times this fall to boost his OBP to .720 and his OPS to 1.506 with Surprise. Three of his games have been at third base and he was the team’s DH in two other games.
Hettiger was 1-for-4 in the game and is batting .250 (4-for-16) with three runs scored and two doubles. Hettiger has struggled defensively with two passed balls in four games and baserunners are 12 out of 14 in stolen base attempts against him. He allowed three stolen bases in Wednesday’s game.
