Today is all hands on deck for the Phillies and they have activated pitcher Jesus Luzardo, who could potentially be thrown into the mix for the final day of the season. Luzardo was placed on the IL on September 15 retroactive to September 12, with left shoulder inflammation. Today, the final day of the regular season, ended his stint on the IL and the Phillies didn’t waste any time in adding him to their roster.
Luzardo could see action for the Phillies today, but it would be out of the bullpen. Zack Wheeler will get the start for Philadelphia, which effectively takes him out of the running to pitch in the Wild Card Series if the Phillies make the playoffs.
The last time that Luzardo faced hitters was on September 9 after he threw a two-hit, complete game shutout against Atlanta, who would be the likely wild card opponent for the Phillies. He first reported shoulder discomfort and was skipped in his next scheduled start before being placed on the IL and officially diagnosed with shoulder inflammation.
On the season, Luzardo is 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 29 starts with the Phillies.
To clear room for Luzardo the Phillies designated pitcher Luis Urquidy for assignment. Urquidy, who was claimed off of waivers from the Chicago White Sox gave the Phillies bullpen a shot in the arm in his first relief outing during a bullpen game when he tossed 4.2 shutout innings against the New York Mets. He didn’t pitch again until Saturday when he gave up three earned runs in 2.2 innings against Tampa bay in a 12-1 loss. His two starts come out to a 3.68 ERA with the Phillies and he finished the season with a 2-2, 4.95 ERA in 13 games, including one start, with Pittsburgh, the White Sox, and the Phillies.
