The Phillies claimed right-hander Jose Urquidy off of waivers from the Chicago White Sox as they searched desperately for pitching help. The Phillies became Urquidy’s third team this season after opening the year with Pittsburgh and was dealt to Chicago for pitcher Felix Doroteo on July 26th. The Sox designated him for assignment on September and the Phillies claimed him two days later.
In 11 previous outings, including one start, the 31-year-old had a 2-2 record with a 5.28 ERA with the Pirates and White Sox. But in his Phillies debut Friday night, Urquidy gave the team a much needed 4.2 innings of shutout baseball as one of four pitchers used by the Phillies in a bullpen game that was necessitated by left-hander Jesus Luzardo being placed on the IL.
Tim Mayza started for the Phillies, but retired just one of the first five batters he faced and gave way to Urquidy with the bases loaded. Urquidy gave up a single to A.J. Ewing, the first hitter he faced, to allow two runs to score. The veteran got the next two hitters without allowing any further damage and struck out the first two hitters in the second inning before giving up a double to Juan Soto. Urquidy came right back to get Bo Bichette looking to strand Soto.
From there, Urquidy retired eight of the next nine batters before giving up back-to-back singles to Carson Benge and Mark Vientos to put runners on first and third with two out in the fifth. Again, he got a strikeout, this time getting Ewing to swing-and-miss on an 85 mph changeup to get out of the jam.
Orion Kerkering then allowed three earned runs in the seventh before Tanner Banks threw two shutout innings in what turned out to be a 6-3 loss for the Phillies.
