Lehigh Valley IronPigs
The IronPigs mounted a furious rally at NBT Bank Stadium on Wednesday night but still walked away with a 5-4 loss to the Syracuse Mets, their third straight defeat. Lehigh Valley fell to 67-78 on the season.
Keaton Anthony drove in the game’s first run with a first-inning single, but Syracuse wasted no time answering. Ronny Mauricio doubled home a run in the bottom half, Eric Wagaman singled in another, and Jefferson Rojas blew the game open with a two-run homer in the second that put the Mets up 4-1.
Alan Rangel settled in after that and turned in his best start of the year, working five innings and striking out a career-high ten batters — six of them in a row at one stretch — while allowing four runs on six hits. His teammates chipped away at the deficit late. Robert Moore cut it to 4-3 with a two-run homer in the fifth, his 15th of the season, and Anthony tied it at four with an RBI double in the sixth. The tie lasted all of one half-inning. Ryan Clifford took reliever Michael Mercado deep for a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth, and the Mets never trailed again.
Mercado (4-5) absorbed the loss out of the bullpen. Kevin Herget worked 1.2 scoreless innings for the win, and Chayce McDermott struck out two in a scoreless ninth to lock down the save.
Lehigh Valley and Syracuse play the next game in their series Thursday night at NBT Bank Stadium, with Chuck King starting for the IronPigs opposite Jack Wenninger.
Reading Fightin Phils
The Fightin Phils are in the middle of a best-of-three Eastern League Division Series against the Hartford Yard Goats, having taken Game 1 by a lopsided 21-4 score at FirstEnergy Stadium on Tuesday. The series shifts to Hartford for Game 2, which is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m., with a decisive Game 3, if necessary, set for Friday.
