Reading Fightin Phils
Reading delivered its biggest offensive outburst of the year at exactly the right time, blasting the Hartford Yard Goats 21-4 in Game 1 of the Eastern League Divisional Series on Tuesday at FirstEnergy Stadium. The win was the Fightin Phils’ first playoff victory since 2016 and their first postseason appearance since 2019.
Hartford struck first, plating three runs in the top of the second on a single hit after starter Gage Wood walked the bases loaded with nobody out. Reading answered immediately and then some. Aroon Escobar opened the scoring with a two-run homer to left, the first long ball of Reading’s playoff run. Caleb Ricketts and Pedro León followed with back-to-back doubles to tie the game, and the Fightins kept the line moving from there. Bryan Rincon, Raylin Heredia, Austin Murr and Dante Nori all drove in runs before the inning ended, capping a 12-run second that is the most runs Reading has scored in a single frame all season.
The Fightins kept pushing in the third, loading the bases twice and getting a bases-clearing double from Rincon that made it 16-3. Hartford’s only other run before the ninth came on a Braylen Wimmer double in the sixth. Reading closed the book with five more runs in the seventh.
Rincon, Heredia, Escobar, León and Murr all finished with multiple hits and Rincon drove in a team-high five runs.
On the mound, Gage Wood settled down after his rocky start, working four innings of three-run ball with four strikeouts in a no-decision. Evan Gates threw 1.1 shutout innings to pick up the win, and Daniel Harper closed the door with a double-play to end it.
Reading travels to Hartford for Game 2 of the series Thursday, with Cody Bowker starting opposite Jackson Cox. A win would send the Fightin Phils to the Eastern League Championship Series for the first time since 2015.
Lehigh Valley IronPigs
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs fell to the Syracuse Mets 9-1 on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium, managing just four hits in a lopsided road loss. Syracuse scored in five different innings and never trailed, turning a competitive early game into a rout by the middle frames.
Otto Kemp supplied the offensive highlight for Lehigh Valley. The third baseman launched a solo home run 395 feet to left-center in the eighth inning off Syracuse reliever Dylan Ross. Keaton Anthony, Dylan Moore and Payton Henry each singled, but the IronPigs stranded ten runners and went hitless with runners in scoring position despite drawing six walks as a team.
Brian Keller took the loss for Lehigh Valley, allowing four runs on four hits over five innings while striking out two. The bullpen struggled behind him: Nestor Cortes and Andrew Hoffmann combined to allow five runs across the sixth and eighth innings, turning a manageable deficit into a blowout. Mitch Neunborn and Tristan Garnett were the only IronPigs relievers to finish their outings without allowing a run.

Syracuse spread the offense around all night. Jefferson Rojas and D’Andre Smith each went deep, and Vidal Bruján drove in four runs while going 3-for-4 to earn Player of the Game honors. The Mets tacked on three more runs in the eighth to seal it.
The loss leaves Lehigh Valley well outside playoff contention in the International League standings with the season winding down. Kemp’s blast was the IronPigs’ only run of the night and a rare bright spot in a game Syracuse controlled from the second inning on.
