Lehigh Valley IronPigs
The IronPigs opened a seven-game series at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with a doubleheader Tuesday at PNC Field and split the two games.
Game one completed a contest suspended back on Aug. 16, and Lehigh Valley erased a 2-0 deficit to win 4-2. Drake Fellows worked six innings in the start, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs. Tanner Banks took over in the eighth and finished the game with three hitless, two-strikeout innings to earn the win.
Trailing 2-1 in the eighth, Steward Berroa singled home the tying run, stole second, and later scored on a Kameron Misner groundout that RailRiders catcher Abrahan Gutierrez couldn’t corral cleanly. Otto Kemp followed with a two-run single to plate Misner and Christian Cairo for the go-ahead runs. The win snapped a three-game skid, even though Lehigh Valley finished with just six hits and stranded five runners.
Game two got away from the Pigs early and never came back. Ryan Cusick, Tucker Davidson and Tristan Garnett combined to allow 16 runs, with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre building the lead behind home runs from Anthony Volpe, J.C. Escarra and a two-homer night from Kenedy Corona, the second a grand slam. Berroa, an outfielder, even pitched the final frame. Lehigh Valley managed a single hit all game in the 16-0 loss, and Cusick dropped to 1-7.
The split leaves Lehigh Valley at 63-69 overall, 28-29 in the second half. The series continues Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., with Casey Lawrence on the mound for the IronPigs against Alexander Cornielle.
Reading Fightin Phils
Reading opened its final regular-season road trip with a 5-3 loss at Hartford’s Dunkin’ Park on Tuesday night.
The Yard Goats scored twice in the first inning and broke the game open with a three-run seventh, while Reading answered with two runs in the third and one in the fifth. Hartford held a decided edge in contact, out-hitting the Fightin Phils 11-3, with each team committing a single error. Victor Juarez picked up the win for the home club, and closer Austin Smith worked the ninth to secure his fifth save of the season. Jack Dallas absorbed the loss.
The setback opens a six-game series that runs through Sunday and closes out Reading’s road slate for the year. The Fightin Phils came into the week holding a comfortable cushion atop the Northeast Division, sitting 3.5 games ahead of Somerset and 4.5 up on both Portland and Binghamton. Somerset won to move to 2.5 games behind, as did Binghamton, which puts the Rumble Ponies just 3.5 games out. Portland lost and stays 4.5 games behind the Fightins. Reading will look to bounce back Wednesday as the series in Hartford continues.
Jersey Shore BlueClaws
Jersey Shore needed extra innings to open its season-closing series at Hub City, beating the Spartanburgers 6-4 in 10 at Fifth Third Park.
Hub City’s Arturo De Freitas homered in each of his first two at-bats, including a 410-foot solo shot in the second inning, but Jersey Shore answered when right fielder Devin Saltiban led off the fourth with a home run — his seventh of the year — to get the BlueClaws on the board. A pair of Jersey Shore runners then reached on Hub City errors, and TJayy Walton lined a single to bring both home.
The game stayed tight into extras. With Hub City’s Case Matter on the mound in the 10th, Juan Villavicencio singled to bring in the automatic runner, and Robert Phelps followed with a hit before a double play closed out the frame at 6-4. Titan Kennedy-Hayes retired the Spartanburgers in order in the bottom of the 10th to lock down the win for Jersey Shore.
The victory opens a six-game series in Spartanburg that closes out Hub City’s home schedule for 2026. Jersey Shore and Hub City continue the series Wednesday at Fifth Third Park.
Clearwater Threshers
Clearwater opened its final homestand of the regular season with a 7-3 win over Fort Myers on Tuesday night at BayCare Ballpark, powered by a five-run second inning.
Cade Climie walked to start the frame and scored on a Reece Moroney single. Tyler Spangler, the Phillies’ first-round pick, doubled home a run before Will Gasparino cleared the bases with a double of his own, and later scored on a Nolan Beltran sacrifice fly to cap the outburst. Fort Myers answered with two runs in the third on an inside-the-park home run, but Clearwater pushed the lead back to five with a leadoff triple from Moroney, who then scored on an RBI groundout by Spangler. The Threshers added another run in the fifth when two walks, a wild pitch, and an RBI single from Evan Bouldin plated a run.
Clearwater’s pitching staff did the rest. Brad Pacheco struck out five over four innings without a decision, and James Tallon (4-2) worked 1.1 scoreless innings for the win. Luis Avila and Orlando Gonzalez combined to close out the final two frames without allowing a baserunner.
Spangler has now driven in four runs over his last two games, and Beltran has reached base via walk in 14 of his last 14 games played.
The Threshers, now 70-54 overall and 30-28 in the second half, continue the homestand Wednesday against Fort Myers with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
