Lehigh Valley IronPigs
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs opened a six-game homestand with a 2-1 win over the Syracuse Mets on Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park. Lehigh Valley struck first in the bottom of the first inning, when first baseman Keaton Anthony launched a two-run home run to left field off Syracuse starter Jonathan Santucci with a runner on third and two outs. It was Anthony’s eighth home run of the season, coming off the bat at 99.5 mph and traveling 369 feet.
After working out of some first inning trouble, IronPigs starter Chuck King held Syracuse in check for most of the night, allowing only a solo home run to third baseman Ronny Mauricio in the top of the fourth inning that trimmed Lehigh Valley’s lead to 2-1. King worked six innings, allowing four hits and one run while walking one and striking out five over 84 pitches.
The Lehigh Valley bullpen closed out the win from there. Max Lazar worked 1.2 innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two. Lou Trivino III entered in the eighth and hit a batter to load the bases before striking out pinch-hitter Billy Amick to escape the jam. Trivino worked 1.1 scoreless innings overall to lock down his seventh save of the season.
The IronPigs finished with six hits on the night and went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position, though they also left seven runners on base. Anthony went 1-for-3 with a walk to go with his home run and two RBI. Chuck King improved to 9-6 on the season with the win, while Santucci fell to 0-3 in the loss for Syracuse.
The win pushed Lehigh Valley to 61-64 overall and 26-24 in the second half. The IronPigs and Mets continue their series Wednesday with Drake Fellows (5-2, 4.98 ERA) starting for Lehigh Valley against a Syracuse starter to be named.
Reading Fightin Phils
The Reading Fightin Phils rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Binghamton Rumble Ponies 8-6 in their 23rd annual Baseballtown Classic morning game. The win gave Reading a three-game lead atop the Eastern League Northeast Division standings.
Binghamton jumped out front early on solo home runs from Eli Serrano and Jefferson Rojas, then extended the lead to four runs on a two-run homer from Chris Suero in the sixth that chased Reading starter Adam Seminaris, who allowed four runs over 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Reading answered in the bottom of the sixth, as three straight singles loaded the bases for Alex Binelas, who delivered a two-run double, with Carson DeMartini adding an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3. Binghamton answered right back with back-to-back home runs from John Bay and Corey Collins to push the lead back to three runs.
Reading chipped away in the seventh on an Austin Murr leadoff triple and a Bryan Rincon RBI single, then completed the comeback in the eighth. Carson DeMartini led off the inning with his seventh home run of the season to cut the deficit to one. A wild pitch scored Pedro Leon to tie the game at six, and Dante Nori, just off the injured list, delivered a two-run homer, his third of the season, for an 8-6 lead.
Jack Dallas earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, and Estibenzon Jimenez picked up his fifth save with a scoreless ninth. Both teams combined for seven home runs and 21 hits on the day. Reading improved to 30-21 in the second half and returns to action Wednesday against Binghamton at 6:45 p.m., with Cody Bowker starting for the Fightin Phils.
Jersey Shore BlueClaws
The Jersey Shore BlueClaws snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-4 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Tuesday night in the series opener at ShoreTown Ballpark. Jersey Shore took an early lead when Robert Phelps led off the bottom of the first with his ninth home run of the season and the fourth leadoff home run by a BlueClaws hitter this year.
Wilmington answered with an unearned run in the second to tie the game against Jersey Shore starter Juan Amarante. The BlueClaws regained the lead in the fourth on a Devin Saltiban single combined with a throwing error that allowed TJayy Walton to score. Scott Mudler followed with a sacrifice fly. Wilmington tied the game again in the fifth with two runs against Amarante on just one hit, a walk and two balks.
Jersey Shore blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four times to take a commanding lead. Walton singled home the go-ahead run off a rehabbing Josiah Gray, a run scored on a throwing error, and Wuilfredo Antunez capped the rally with a two-run single for a 7-3 advantage. Wilmington got a run back in the sixth on a solo home run off Jersey Shore reliever Micah Ottenbreit, but the BlueClaws bullpen held from there.
Amarante earned the win, allowing three runs, two earned, over five innings on just one hit. Keegan Batka recorded the final six outs for his second save of the season. Brady Day extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games with two hits, and Walton and Saltiban also each had multi-hit nights. The BlueClaws and Blue Rocks continue their series Wednesday at 6:35 p.m.
Clearwater Threshers
The Clearwater Threshers lost 6-5 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Tuesday night at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in the opener of a six-game road series, falling for the fifth straight game despite building an early four-run lead.
Lakeland scored an unearned run in the first inning, but Clearwater answered in the second. Macon Winslow led off with a single and eventually scored on a bases-loaded groundout by Nolan Beltran to tie the game, and Jack Hopko reached on an error that allowed Jonathan Hogart and Matthew Ferrara to score, giving the Threshers a 3-1 lead. Clearwater extended the advantage in the fourth inning with a leadoff single from Ferrara setting up another bases-loaded situation; fielder’s choice groundouts from Will Gasparino and Tyler Spangler each drove in a run to make it 5-1.
Lakeland began its comeback in the fifth with a two-run home run from Cris Rodriguez that cut the deficit in half, then tied the game at five with another two-run homer in the sixth and went ahead with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Clearwater got the leadoff man aboard in the ninth but could not push across the tying run, falling 6-5.
Threshers starter Zuher Yousuf worked five innings in a no-decision, allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Tyler Bowen was charged with a blown save after allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning, and James Tallon took the loss after allowing a run in the eighth.
Ferrara was Clearwater’s only player with multiple hits or runs on the night. Jonathan Hogart and Macon Winslow have each reached base safely in ten straight games. The Threshers and Flying Tigers continue their series Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
