While Clearwater has been cleaning up on player awards from the Florida State League, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs didn’t have any weekly honors; until now. Right-hander Alan Rangel was named the International League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending August 2 and Jonathan Hogart won the Player of the Week Award in the Florida State League.
Rangel made one start during the week for Lehigh Valley and didn’t allow an earned run over 6.1 innings of work when he faced the Buffalo Bisons on Saturday. The 28-year-old allowed just two hits and two walks in the outing while striking out six hitters. Rangel did allow an unearned run after a foul pop was missed by shortstop Rob Moore.
The performance lowered Rangel’s ERA to 4.22 for the season with Lehigh Valley.
Meanwhile, Hogart tore up Jupiter Hammerheads pitching to the tune of a .474 (9-19) batting average in their recent series. Hogart played in five of the six games in the series. Hogart had multi-hit games in three of the games, including picking up a pair of games with three hits in each game. The 24-year-old had three home runs and nine runs driven in during the series, including driving in six runs in the Saturday game. For the week, Hogart slashed .474/.560/1.000 for the Threshers.
The outfielder becomes the seventh different member of the Clearwater Threshers to be honored by the Florida State League this season. Pitchers Ramon Marquez and George Klassen have won the Pitcher of the Week honors and Matthew Ferrera, Robert Phelps, Ty Doucette, and Alirio Ferrebus have all won the league’s Player of the Week honors this season with Ferrebus winning the award twice this season.
Hogart bats right-handed and currently has 14 home runs and 54 RBI with Clearwater this season. His slash line with the Threshers is .239/.378/.491.
