The Phillies handed out their Minor League Pitcher and Player of the Month honors for the month of July when they awarded reliever Alex McFarlane, formerly of the Reading Fightins, Philadelphia Phillies, and now with Lehigh Valley was named the Pitcher of the Month. Juan Parra, one of the key international free agent signings for the Phillies, who is playing in the Dominican Summer League (DSL) was given the Player of the Month honors.
The 25-year-old McFarlane made his major league debut with the Phillies last month. With four appearances at Double-A Reading and two more with Lehigh Valley, McFarlane posted a 0.00 ERA, throwing 7.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks with 14 strikeouts. Opponents hit .148 against him and he posted a 0.822 WHIP as a minor leaguer. He also added a scoreless inning against the Dodgers in his MLB debut. After the debut, he was optioned to Lehigh Valley where he made his Triple-A debut with Lehigh Valley against Buffalo and struck out two hitters in a clean inning of work.
On the season, McFarlane is 1-1, 1.95 in 34 relief appearances in the minors. The right-hander was drafted by the Phillies in the fourth round of the 2022 Draft out of the University of Miami. McFarlane was also the Phillies Co-Pitcher of the Month for the month of May.
Parra, a switch-hitting 17-year-old, is in his first season in the DSL and played in 20 games last month with a .323/.532/.569/1.101 slash line. He delivered five doubles, a triple, three home runs, 15 RBI, 29 runs and 25 walks in 95 plate appearances. Against the DSL Rockies, Parra tied his career-high with five runs scored. He followed that up with his first grand slam against the DSL Yankees two days later.
Among DSL hitters with at least 80 plate appearances, Parra ranked first in runs, tied for second in walks, was fourth in on-base percentage and OPS, sixth in walk rate, and eighth in slugging percentage.
