Phillies prospects earned a pitcher of the week honor and a player of the week honor for their performances from July 20-26. Pitcher Ramon Marquez from the Jersey Shore BlueClaws was awarded the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week Award and Francisco Renteria from the Phillies Dominican Summer League earned the DSL Player of the Week Award.
Marquez, 20, made just one start, but it was five innings of scoreless, one-hit, one-walk ball against the Brooklyn Cyclones. Of the 15 outs that Marquez recorded, 10 of them came on strikeouts. Of the 78 pitches Marquez threw, 51 of them were for strikes.
This was the third time this season that Marquez has taken a weekly league award. The first came while he was a member of the Clearwater Threshers and was honored for the week of May 11-17. The second award was earned on his first start with Jersey Shore on May 19 when he broke into the league with five innings of scoreless, hitless ball.
Between Clearwater and Jersey Shore, Marquez has 11 appearances, 10 of which were starts, and has a combined record of 5-1 with a 1.83 ERA.
Renteria, 17, was the Phillies top international free agent signing this season and has put up somewhat unbelievable numbers in the DSL. In 39 games, Renteria has six home runs and has driven in 38 runs with a slash line of .378/.463/.622 for a 1.085 OPS. He also has 18 stolen bases in 21 attempts. Defensively, in over 200 innings in center field, Renteria has not made an error this season and has one outfield assist.
In seven games last week, Renteria had hits in six of them and finished the week with a .483 average with 14 hits in 29 at-bats. He delivered with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs resulting in 14 RBI for the week. This is Renteria’s first league award.
