The Florida Complex League (FCL) wrapped up, which is a signal to teams to move some players around in the minor league system. The Phillies FCL team finished 22-37 (.737), leaving them last in the North Division, 16 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays.
Jack Barker and Esterling Rodriguez led the team with five home runs each and were the team leaders in RBI with Barker collecting 32 and Rodriguez 30. Barker, the Phillies 13th round pick in the 2025 Draft, also led the team with 15 stolen bases and put together a slash line of .250/.375/.411, playing in 58 of the Phillies 59 games.
Luis Gonzalez, 21, led the team in innings pitched with 53, but unfortunately, also led the team in negative categories such as losses (7), home runs (11), and tied for the team lead in hit batters (10). Among pitchers with 20 or more innings, pitcher Yordanis Guerra was the team leader in ERA with a 5.15 mark for the season.
Guerra, a left-hander, was the lone member of the pitching staff to be promoted so far. The 19-year-old was promoted to Low-A Clearwater. Also promoted was shortstop Romeli Espinosa, who hit .282 in the DSL last season and put together a slash line of .212/.294/.281 in 54 FCL games. Espinosa is currently the Phillies number 22 prospect on MLB Pipeline.
Threshers swimming further north
Five Threshers moved to the Jersey Shore. Left-hander Cade Obermueller, whose birthday is today, got an early birthday present when he and right-hander Marty Gair were promoted to the BlueClaws. Catcher/first baseman Alirio Ferrebus, shortstop Juan Villavicencio, and outfielders Griffin Burkholder and Nathan Humphreys were also promoted.
Obermueller, a left-hander, was 0-2, 2.78 in 11 starts at Clearwater this season, his first as a professional. Obermueller was drafted by the Phillies in the second round of last year’s draft and is currently the Phillies number eight prospect. Gair is a right-handed reliever who was in his second season with the Threshers and converted six of seven save opportunities this season. In his two seasons at Clearwater, Gair has a 4.65 ERA in 52 relief appearances.
Ferrebus, 20, made the move from the FCL to Clearwater last season and hit a combined .234 between the two stops. This season, he was batting .324/.375/.520 with a career-high 11 home runs and 58 RBI. Ferrebus is the Phillies number seven prospect.
Burkholder was having a breakout season at Clearwater with career highs in average (.241), on-base percentage (.356), and slugging (.408), plus home runs (8) and RBI (26). The Phillies drafted Burkholder in the 20th round of the 2024 Draft out of Freedom High School in Virginia and he is currently ranked as the 12th best prospect in the organization. He turns 21 at the end of next month.
Humphreys, 23, is a Dallas Baptist product who hit .233 in 24 games at Clearwater last year and has pushed that to .264 in 70 games this season. Plate discipline is a definite part of Humphreys’ game and he has drawn almost as many walks (48) as strikeouts (49) so far this season, which has helped push his OBP to .388. He has also stolen 21 bases in 26 attempts. MLB Pipeline does not have Humphreys ranked, but his numbers and development suggest he could be there soon, which isn’t bad for an undrafted free agent.
Villavicencio is a 21-year-old international free agent signing out of Venezuela. Debuting in the DSL in 2022, his climb has been a little slower than the other players promoted. He split last season between the FCL and Clearwater, but hit just .146 with the Threshers in 26 games. The bat has come around and in 70 games this season, Villavicencio was slashing .298/.383/.540 before his promotion. He also combines power with speed and has 13 home runs and 20 stolen bases this season.
From Jersey Shore to Reading
Reading is gaining a left-hander in Mavis Graves, the Phillies number 24 prospect. They also pick up catcher Guillermo Rosario and outfielder Wuilfredo Antunez from Jersey Shore.
Graves was in his second season with the BlueClaws and in 37 starts in those two seasons is 7-14 with a 4.56 ERA. The Phillies took Graves in the sixth round of the 2022 Draft out of Eastside High School in Taylors, South Carolina.
Catching on with Lehigh Valley
The IronPigs lost catcher Payton Henry to the Phillies when both Garrett Stubbs and Rafael Marchan went down to injuries. That left Paul McIntosh and Lou Albrecht – who is an organizational filler – as the catchers. Henry was optioned back to Lehigh Valley on Tuesday when Philadelphia activated Stubbs from the IL. With Monday’s moves, Jordan Dissin moved from Double-A Reading to Lehigh Valley.
Dissin, who is from nearby Pottstown, was hitting just .184 in 37 games with Reading this season. Philadelphia selected Dissin in the 12th round of the 2022 Draft out of Saddleback Junior College in California.
