The MLB Futures Game will be played Sunday at Citizens Bank Park, one day after the MLB Draft, which also takes place at The Bank. A year ago, Gage Wood was a part of the MLB Draft. This year he’s not just a part of the Futures Game, he will be the starting pitcher for the National League.

The Phillies have been extremely conservative with Wood’s innings and pitch count this season. He hasn’t pitched more than four innings in a game, which he has done five times. He has been allowed to throw more than 60 pitches just twice, both times with Clearwater. On May 15 he threw 62 pitched against Lakeland and in his start before than, he threw a season-high 68 pitches in the first game of a doubleheader at Daytona Beach. On the season, the 22-year-old has thrown 887 pitches or an average of 55 pitches per game. Of his pitches, 584 (66-percent) have been for strikes.
Wood will be joined on the National League roster by Reading teammate Wen-Hui Pan, who started the season with Jersey Shore and posted a 0.82 ERA in nine relief appearances covering 11 innings of work. He also went 3-for-3 in converting saves while with the BlueClaws. Since being promoted to Double-A Reading, Pan has made eight relief appearances and has a 3.38 ERA and has had just one save opportunity which he converted.
Shane Victorino will manage the National League squad for the game which begins at noon on Sunday. The American League coaching staff will have an extremely Philadelphia feel to it. The team will be managed by Larry Bowa with Juan Samuel serving as his bench coach. Milt Thompson will be the hitting coach, Billy Wagner will be the team’s pitching coach. Another former Phillie, Michael Bourn will be the American League team’s first base coach.
