About 12 hours after letting a one-run deficit blossom to a four-run deficit, Chase Shugart has been optioned back to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Shugart came on to pitch the ninth inning in Monday’s game with the Phillies down 8-7. After getting the first two outs, he surrendered a single, a walk, and a three-run home run to Endy Rodriguez that made it an 11-7 game.
To replace Shugart, right-hander Lou Trivino has been recalled. The 34-year-old was dominating at Triple-A with a 3-0, 1.27 ERA with three saves in three opportunities. His 22 relief appearances have covered 28.1 innings and he has issued 10 walks while striking out 34. His season WHIP is 1.20 and opponents are hitting .226 against him.
Trivino has pitched for six different major league teams – Oakland, the Yankees, San Francisco, the Dodgers, Philadelphia, and Baltimore – and has a 4.00 ERA with a 24-27 record in three starts and 331 relief outings. He pitched 10 games for the Phillies in 2025 with a 2.00 ERA in nine innings.
The Phillies traded infielder Francisco Loreto to Pittsburgh to acquire Shugart back in January. The Phillies recalled him from Lehigh Valley in mid-April and he got off to a good start for them with a 1.00 ERA over nine games in April and a 3.48 ERA over six games in May. Since then, his ERA has risen from 2.33 to 4.97 after posting a 10.34 ERA in June.
Two weeks after being recalled, Shugart became just the third Phillies pitcher since 1920 to earn the win in both ends of a doubleheader when the Phillies swept San Francisco.
Loreto, 19, is a first baseman and part-time catcher who is batting .237 in 22 games with the Pirates FCL team.
