For Seth Johnson, being recalled by the Phillies on Thursday was nothing new. He has made the trip at least once in every season since 2024 and this is his third trip this season. In his latest return to Citizens Bank Park, Johnson threw a perfect inning of relief that dropped his season ERA in the majors from 7.36 down to 5.79. The inning included two strikeouts and he threw 11 strikes in 17 pitches.
Bryse Wilson has been in the majors with Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, and the White Sox previously and made his Phillies debut last night with the Phillies. Wilson had been starting for Lehigh Valley and would have started there Thursday night if not for the promotion. Interim manager Don Mattingly ran Wilson out for two innings and he allowed one hit and a walk in his Philadelphia debut.
The two relievers provided some rest for a bullpen that had to cover seven innings Wednesday night when Andrew Painter was pulled after the second inning and six earned runs. Aaron Nola gave the Phillies five innings in the 6-4 loss to the Mets on Thursday, leaving four more for the bullpen to cover.
At Lehigh Valley, Johnson was having a great season with a 1.33 ERA and six saves in six chances over 24 relief outings with the IronPigs. Wilson wasn’t having the same success. He had 11 starts and came in after Zack Wheeler pitched a rehab assignment in early April. In those 12 games, Wilson was 2-5 with a 6.29 ERA. Looking closer though he was pitching much better with no runs allowed in his last 13 innings.
Over his major league career, Wilson has 57 starts and 107 relief appearances to go with a 20-23 record and a career 4.80 ERA.
The Phillies had one roster opening that was created when Painter was optioned to Lehigh Valley and created another opening when they optioned left-hander Tanner Banks to Lehigh Valley.
