The Miami Marlins are not a good offensive team. Unfortunately, Andrew Painter couldn’t contain their offense in his latest outing and it resulted in the Phillies pitching prospects being optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after the game ended. A corresponding roster moves was not immediately announced, but will be made Thursday prior to the start of a three-game series against the New York Mets on Thursday.
Painter gave up six runs in just two innings of work and needed 56 pitches to work through the two innings. He also allowed two home runs, giving him seven home runs allowed in his last 11 innings of work.
After working his way back from Tommy John surgery, Painter was given the fifth spot in the rotation to start the season, but struggled through 14 games. The Phillies used Zach Pop to start against Arizona earlier in the season when Painter was down with a migraine. Painter entered in the third inning and it turned out to be his best outing of the season as he gave up just one run in five innings and struck out seven hitters. That prompted the Phillies to use an opener for Painter against Milwaukee, but the success did not carry over.
On the season, Painter is 1-8 with a 7.06 ERA. In three June outings, Painter has a 13.11 ERA with 24 walks in 65 innings. Last season with Lehigh Valley, Painter started 22 games and went 5-6 with a 5.40 ERA.
To fill Painter’s spot in the rotation when a fifth starter is needed, the most likely candidate is right-hander Alan Rangel, who has been pitching on the same nights as Painter and has been one of the more consistent starters for Lehigh Valley. Rangel started Wednesday night for the IronPigs and had a rough first inning when he gave up two earned runs, but he settled in from there. In five innings, Rangel allowed six hits, three walks, and struck out four. He allowed four earned runs. Rangel’s ERA is 3.99 with Lehigh Valley.
