Actually, the invitation is a little confusing. Mattingly confirmed that Dave Roberts of the Dodgers, who is the NL manager, did ask him to be on the staff, but he would not confirm whether he accepted or whether it’s a done deal. It is customary for the manager to ask the manager of the team hosting the All-Star Game to be on the staff. In fact, Mattingly was on the 2018 coaching staff when the game was played in Miami, where he was the manager at the time.

“It’s probably more MLB’s decision to do whatever they do with the announcement of it,” Mattingly told reporters after Bob Nightengale of USA Today announced the invitation over the weekend. Nightengale also said that Cardinals’ manager Oli Marmol has also been asked to be a coach. “I think we should just try to can it until MLB does their thing.”

Mattingly is no stranger to All-Star games. As a player, Mattingly was on six all-star teams. He related that when he made the team in 1984, Rod Carew, who had been his favorite player as a child, gave him an autographed bat. As a manager, Mattingly was on the 2018 staff and also was picked by Bruce Bochy to be on the 2015 NL coaching staff.

Toronto manager John Schneider will manage the American League team.
