Daniel Robert, who twice collapsed after bullpen sessions months apart, had a second procedure recently and will miss the remainder of the 2026 season. The first bullpen incident occurred last October at the Carpenter Complex in Clearwater. Phillies athletic trainers administered CPR and used an external defibrillator to restart Robert’s heart. He was cleared to begin workouts during Spring Training and had another incident when he was walking off from a bullpen session.
Following the first incident Robert had a cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) surgically placed near the side of his chest. Robert re-signed with the Phillies this February when he was cleared to resume baseball activities. The second incident occurred on March 22 when the ICD triggered as he was coming off the mound. After being examined at the hospital he was released.
The incident in March showed a cardiac arrhythmia and in early April, Robert underwent a cardiac ablation at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta to fix the issue. The procedure is done by accessing the heart with a catheter either through the neck, arm, or leg. Once the area of the heart causing the problem is identified, the catheter is used to destroy that area of the heart and restore the heart’s electrical system. The procedure was said to be successful.
Robert has been told he would not be able to return to the mound this season and is reportedly focusing on returning next season. He was recently cleared for a cardiac progressive activity program that will be watched by his cardiology team.
