The Phillies are almost using a rotation now for the final outfield spot on the roster. First, it was Otto Kemp and Felix Reyes taking turns. Now, Steward Berroa, who the Phillies acquired earlier this season from Milwaukee, will take his turn as a utility outfielder for the Phils.

Otto Kemp has spent a good chunk of the season with the Phillies. He made the Opening Day roster but was optioned to Lehigh Valley on April 18. They recalled him again exactly a month later on May 18 and less than two weeks later, have sent him back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In his time with Philadelphia, he has played in just 13 games and is hitting .080 (2-25) in the majors. With the IronPigs, Kemp has hit .262/.340/.452/.792 in 24 games.

Berroa is first and foremost known for his defensive ability and his speed. Overall, Berroa has played 30 major league games, 28 with Tampa Bay in 2024 and two with Milwaukee in 2025. He has a slash line of .167/.308/.186/.492 in the majors with seven stolen bases in nine attempts.

The Phillies have struggled to find a right-handed hitting bat for their lineup. The Phillies had used Kemp and Reyes in platoons with Brandon Marsh earlier in the season and as Marsh’s numbers went up and he got more playing time, they have been relegated to pinch-hitting duties, which don’t come around often with the Phillies lineup.

Berroa has played primarily in center field, but can play in both corner outfield spots.

The Phillies made another roster move on Friday when they placed starter Aaron Nola on the Paternity List and have recalled pitcher Nolan Hoffman from Lehigh Valley. Hoffman held a 2.30 ERA in 14 relief appearances with Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
