Trevor Richards came up to the Phillies when Kyle Backhus went on the IL. It turned out that when Jhoan Duran was ready to come off of the IL, it would be Richards exiting. The type of exit was a little surprising though as the 32-year-old ended his Phillies stint by being dealt to the Chicago White Sox. The Phillies will receive cash in exchange for Richards.
The Phillies signed Richards during the offseason and had him at Triple-A Lehigh Valley to open the season. With five years of major league service time to his credit, Richards could not be sent to Triple-A so the Phillies would have had to DFA him.

The right-hander had pitched well with Lehigh Valley, striking out 52-percent of the 50 hitters he faced and posting a 1.93 ERA. In the majors, Richards made two appearances with Philadelphia and worked 4.1 innings with one earned run allowed. He had struck out five and walked three hitters.
Richards made his MLB debut with the Marlins in 2018 and since then has pitched for Arizona, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Tampa Bay, and Toronto before appearing with the Phillies this season. He has made 61 starts and 236 relief appearances in the majors with a 24-28 record and a 4.52 ERA as a major leaguer.
Duran had missed time with an oblique injury and did not require a rehab assignment prior to being activated before Tuesday’s game. He threw a bullpen session over the weekend and reached 100 mph, high enough to convince the Phillies that a rehab appearance wasn’t necessary.
