You go here, you go there, then you come off of that list, but don’t come back here, go there. It was that kind of day Tuesday with Phillies transactions that affected rosters throughout the organization.

Philadelphia Phillies

Optioned reliever Seth Johnson to Lehigh Valley and recalled reliever Chase Shugart.

Johnson had just joined the Phillies when Jonathan Bowlan (right groin strain) went on the IL. He pitched 1.2 innings against the Cubs on Monday and allowed three earned runs for a 16.20 ERA.

Shugart, who was acquired from the Pirates during the offseason, was recalled. The right-hander was 1-1 in save opportunities with Lehigh Valley and had a 1.80 ERA through five innings in five relief appearances. Shugart got into Tuesday’s game and threw two shutout innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three.

Chase Shugart Scouting Report

Lehigh Valley IronPigs

  • RHP Daniel Harper transferred from Reading to Lehigh Valley
  • RHP John McMillon reinstated from the Development List
  • RHP Zack Wheeler’s (Philadelphia 15-Day IL) rehab assignment has been transferred to Reading
  • OF Cade Fergus reinstated from the Development List and transferred to Reading
  • RHP Griff McGarry has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for international bonus pool space and a player to be named later or cash considerations

It appears that the Phillies have officially given up on McGarry with his trade to the Dodgers. His command issues resurfaced again with Lehigh Valley and he issued seven walks in four innings with a 9.00 ERA. He’s got good stuff, but it does him no good if he can’t get his control issues straightened out.

Wheeler threw a great 5.2 innings for Reading Tuesday. The best rehab start of his four.

Cade Fergus is getting a raw deal from the Phillies. The kid can play, but they’re just not giving him a shot. He was hitting .286 (2-7) with three RBI for Lehigh Valley and is back with Reading where he spent most of last season. Fergus just feels like one of those guys who has the talent to at least be a decent major league player and the Phillies don’t seem interested in him as anything more than an organizational guy.

Reading Fightins

Clearwater Threshers

  • RHP Michael Mercado was reassigned to Clearwater from Lehigh Valley to begin a rehab assignment
  • Outfielder Victor Cardoza reassigned from Clearwater to the Florida Complex League

Mercado has been dealing with shoulder issues and has not pitched for Lehigh Valley so far this season.
