The latest MLB Pipeline list of the Top 100 prospects in baseball has a new member. The Phillies selected Gage Wood last June in the MLB Draft and his first two starts have been nothing short of awesome. The first rounder has a 1.23 ERA over 7.1 innings and has struck out 15 of the 26 hitters he has faced for a 57-percent strikeout rate with Clearwater.
To be on the MLB Pipeline list of prospects a player must still hold their rookie eligibility, meaning that they can not have over 130 MLB at-bats, 50 MLB innings pitched, or 45 days on a major league roster. Because of those rules, catcher Moises Ballesteros of the Cubs has “graduated” from the prospect list, which opened a spot and Wood was inserted.
The 22-year-old Wood should be in line for a promotion to High-A Jersey Shore before too long. It’s likely that if he pitches well in his next start, he would be given the promotion then. The right-hander will likely make his next start on Wednesday in Dunedin.
Wood drew attention prior to last year’s draft when he threw a no-hitter in the College World Series, becoming the first pitcher to ever accomplish that. The Phillies selected him with the 26th overall pick in the draft.
