For the Double-A, High-A, and A leagues, Thursday was Opening Day. Unfortunately, only Reading was the only team to play and that didn’t go well.

Akron 3, Reading 1
Austin Murr, have yourself a game. The 27-year-old outfielder had three hits — all singles — for the Fightins to get off to a good start. Aroon Escobar, Carson DeMartini, and Bryan Rincon, who make up the first three hitters in Reading’s lineup, all had a hit including Escobar and DeMartini opening up the game with back-to-back singles. Unfortunately, two strikeouts and an infield pop-up ended the threat.

On the mound, Andrew Seminaris turned in a strong Opening Day start for Reading. Seminaris’ line finished at 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K and threw 65 pitches, 42 for strikes. Akron got an unearned run against Levi Stoudt but he allowed just one hit and didn’t put any runners on base via a walk. He struck out one hitter. Colin Peluse threw a shutout inning and Alex McFarlane struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth, allowing just one hit.

Jersey Shore BlueClaws
The ‘Claws open toning against Wilmington.

Clearwater at Ft. Myers
Opening Day was postponed by bad weather. The two teams will open tonight with a doubleheader.

Lehigh Valley 4, Durham 0
The IronPigs opened last weekend at Coca-Cola Park and are in Durham this week. The Bulls are not off to a good start at 1-5. Garrett Stubbs, who accepted an outright assignment to Lehigh Valley from the Phillies, made his season debut and gave lift-off to a 1-1 fastball from Logan Workman with two runners on base. Stubbs’ home run traveled 404 feet. The other run came when Rob Moore followed a single by Sergio Alcantara with an RBI double in the fifth inning.

In his second start of the season, Alan Rangel threw six shutout innings and now has allowed just one run in 10.2 innings of work for a 0.84 ERA. Griff McGarry has been an eye-opener for Lehigh Valley in the early going. The righty was returned to the Phillies from the Nationals after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft last December and added another shutout inning and two strikeouts to his line. He now has two shutout innings for the IronPigs and has needed just 26 pitches (16 strikes) to get through the two innings. McGarry has battled control issues in his career, but has not walked a batter in his two innings of work and is throwing a higher percentage of strikes than usual. Lou Trivino and Chase Shugart both added a shutout inning for Lehigh Valley.
