The Phillies have made some moves to option players to their minor league camp. Four players were all sent out Saturday morning and none of the four were expected to make the team out of spring training, although the early move is a little surprising for a couple of them.
Pitcher Jean Cabrera and outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. were both optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley while right-handers Moises Chace and Yoniel Curet were optioned to Double-A Reading.
Cabrera’s option is surprising only in terms of allowing him to get a little more time in camp with the big league club. The 6’0″, 145 pound right-hander threw 2.0 innings against Detroit back on February 27 and then went 2.1 innings, allowing one run in Friday’s game against Pittsburgh for a 2.08 ERA. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out four batters in his two outings.
Rincones, who opened eyes with his power last year in Spring Training, has not played this spring because of a knee injury. He also was an unlikely candidate to make the team, especially when he suffered the injury.
Curet, 23, was acquired from Tampa Bay for right-hander Tommy McCollum last December. He posted a 43.20 ERA in three outings this spring that spanned 1.2 innings, allowing two home runs and four walks, along with four hits this spring. Chance is still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery that he underwent last May. While he is not in the Phillies plans for this season he is still one of the young pitching prospects that the Phillies believe can help down the road.
