The Phillies and Twins will play this year’s Field of Dreams game in Iowa on August 13th next season. It will mark the first time that the MLB has held their Field of Dreams game in four years. An added event takes place two days earlier; the St. Paul Saints and Iowa Cubs will meet at the historic site on August 11th in Dyersville, Iowa for the “MiLB at Field of Dreams Game”.
The last minor league game to be played there was in August of 2022 when the High-A Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City) went up against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Minnesota) in what was the first MiLB at Field of Dreams Game. For that game, the two teams took on alternate identities and wore throwback uniforms of actual teams from bygone ears. Quad Cities took on the identity of the Davenport Blue Sox, who played for various periods of time between 1913 and 1937. Cedar Rapids dropped their Kernels branding and were the Cedar Rapids Bunnies. The Bunnies existed from 1904-1932.
The area, of course, was made famous by the movie Field of Dreams, which starred Kevin Costner and James Earl Jones, and was released in 1989. The ballpark used for the Field of Dreams games was specially constructed next to the field used in the film, so as not to disturb the original field, which along with the farm, land, and other buildings were made famous in the movie. The other structures were also left untouched when the new ballpark was built for the first MLB game played there in 2021 between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees.
A free idea for Major League baseball to use down the road. Why not have the Triple-A teams from the two teams playing in the MLB game meet in the minor league game? That way, fans of the two teams who make the pilgrimage to Iowa would have the chance to see some of the stars of the future for those teams. Besides, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs would probably feel comfortable playing on a farm in Iowa.
