"The one constant through all the years, has been baseball."

BaseBulb – Lighting up baseball’s life since 1930

BaseBulb – Is the guy with bright ideas and answers! He is our resident baseball expert and provider of notes from the world of baseball and beyond. Whenever you see him in a post, look for his words of wit and wisdom. Here are various musings, thoughts, ideas, and other junk from his rather bright, bulbous head.

Sometimes, BaseBulb gets stuck on real old-time baseball questions. I mean, he didn’t become commercially viable until 1879, and he didn’t lend his talents to baseball until the night of April 28, 1930 when the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds played the sport’s first night game, so anything before that he can’t personally attest to.

Click on the title of the post that BaseBulb’s comments came from to illuminate more of his knowledge.

The Players League was a response to what players in the late 1880s saw as unfair labor practices being carried out by team owners; where have we heard that before? The league was able to convince some major players of the time to essentially jump ship from their National League teams and start – for lack of a better description; A League of Their Own. In many ways, it worked; attendance in some cities was good, and even though the league had a short shelf-life, it led to changes in labor practices by owners. It was on October 29, 2008 that the Phillies won World Series Game 5, which had been started two days earlier only to be suspended in the middle of the sixth inning with the score tied. That victory snapped a 28 year championship drought for the Phillies and a long Philadelphia-wide drought of sports championships. Some people pointed back to a new Philadelphia skyscraper in center city that caused havoc in the universe as the reason for the long absence of championships. Others just blamed Philadelphia sports team owners, executives, and players for being stupid. So, was it stupidity or did that skyscraper bring on “The Curse of Billy Penn”? What’s that, you say? BaseBulb will explain it.

When BaseBulb was reminded of Joe Blanton’s home run in the 2008 World Series, he wondered: “Since pitchers no longer bat in the majors, I wonder what other pitchers accomplished the feat before pitchers with bats became a thing of the past.”

He’s got the answers – at least going back to 1900.

From the post: MLB’s 3 Big Issues, Pt.1: A Salary Cap vs A Salary Floor.

Occasionally, BaseBulb will show up in some serious posts. Of course, to some of us everything about baseball is serious. The first time that he did this was when we examined some issues that were affecting baseball. In this, the first installment of the three post series, we took a look at the arguments for and against a Salary Cap and A Salary Floor.

Much of this came from the Dodgers running through the postseason and into the World Series and fans and pundits screaming: “The Dodgers are ruining baseball!”

From the post AFL Update: Nori Returns on October 23, 2025.

BaseBulb traveled virtually to Arizona and noticed that Phillies outfield prospect Daniel Nori was back in the lineup for the Surprise Saguaros after missing two weeks. Then, he remembered that the name “Nori” sounded familiar to that bright, bulbous head of his and another BaseBulb moment was born.

Do you know why that name sounded familiar? No? Not an NBA fan, huh?
