The Adelaide Giants won their third Australian Baseball League championship in four years recently. The team featured eight Phillies prospects on the roster for the Winter League season. We’ll take a look at those prospects.

Background and Amateur Experience
Some lucky scout got to do some scouting in Hawaii and came away with a Phillies prospect. Devin Saltiban grew up in Hilo, Hawaii, and starred at Hilo High School as an athletic outfielder. He wasn’t a widely known name nationally, since Hawaii’s baseball competition level isn’t as deep as in some states, but he made the most of his opportunities and drew attention for a well-rounded skill set that hinted at future impact. Like many Hawaiian prospects before him, he worked closely with local hitting coach Kaha Wong, who has been a mentor to several players that made it into professional baseball. To boost his exposure against better competition, Saltiban played in the MLB Draft League before the 2023 draft, where he showed his ability to handle harder velocity and advanced pitching compared with what he saw in high school. After graduating in 2023, he committed to the University of Hawaii but opted to go pro when he was selected in the third round, 98th overall, by the Philadelphia Phillies and signed for around $602,000, foregoing college ball.

When the Phillies picked him, Saltiban was viewed as a multi-tool prospect with intriguing raw skills. Scouts liked his compact frame, strong bat speed, and aggressive swing that generates above-average exit velocities for his size. Early scouting grades showed a well-balanced toolkit with plus running ability and a chance for more power as he fills out. There was some debate about his best defensive home long term since he was a high school outfielder moving to the infield after the draft, but most evaluators agreed his arm and speed gave him the flexibility to stick on the left side of the defense or in the outfield if needed.

Minor League Development and Statistics
Saltiban began his pro career in the Rookie-level Florida Complex League in 2023 and hit very well in a small sample, batting over .330 with a homer in ten games. He spent 2024 with the Low-A Clearwater Threshers, making his first appearance in a full season league at age 19. There he flirted with a 20-20 season by hitting 17 home runs and stealing 22 bases and also finishing among the league leaders in several offensive categories. That performance earned him All-Star recognition in the Florida State League and a higher prospect ranking within the Phillies organization.

In 2025, Saltiban moved up to High-A with the Jersey Shore BlueClaws but endured a much tougher campaign overall. Over 265 plate appearances, he hit just .190 with an OPS of .577, though he still stole 19 bases. His strikeout rate climbed and his overall offensive production lagged compared with the prior season, indicating some growing pains adjusting to more advanced pitching.

From a development standpoint, Saltiban’s 2024 season highlighted his strengths with above-average walk rates and power production for his age level, and data from Baseball Savant shows scouts have graded his speed as a standout tool. His 2025 struggles exposed some issues against breaking pitches, and the combination of high strikeouts with lower contact rates indicated that pitch recognition and consistency were areas to address. Some advanced community evaluators noted he punished fastballs but was challenged by spin and off-speed offerings.

Defense and Positional Projection
Originally an outfielder, Saltiban was shifted to the infield after signing. Reports from Phillies instructors praised his work ethic and ability to adapt, saying he took to second base quickly. His hands and instincts were described as solid but still developing, and his athleticism projected him as an average defender on the dirt. In 2025, his defense was shuffled around between second base and the outfield, where many feel his plus speed would be used well to track balls, providing him with a long-term home in center or a corner spot depending on how his fielding polish evolves. There isn’t detailed advanced defensive metrics available publicly yet, but reports describe him currently as a fringe‐average defender with upside.

Injuries and Career Impact
Part of the struggles in 2025 may be attributable to a groin injury that landed him on the injured list and required surgery in May. That disrupted what was already a challenging season and halted what had been a rising performance trend earlier in the year. After rehabbing with extended spring training and short rehab stints, he returned to play later in the season and finished stronger, suggesting the injury wasn’t a long-term derailment but did interrupt his development and consistency that year. It likely also bought him a ticket back to Jersey Shore at least for the early part of the 2026 season.

Outlook and Summary
Devin Saltiban’s profile is a blend of exciting tools and the bumps that come with a young prospect’s climb. His bat speed, emerging power, and above-average speed make him a fun player to watch, and his willingness to learn new positions speaks to his work ethic. The challenges he faced in 2025, both performance-wise and with injury, underscore the adjustments needed as he moves up the ladder. If he can refine his approach against diverse pitching and settle into a defensive role that maximizes his skills, he has the upside to grow into an everyday contributor at higher levels in the Philadelphia system.
