While with the Mariners, Dylan Moore played a career-high 135 games in 2024, most of which were filling in for former Phillie J.P. Crawford while he was on the IL. Moore was so solid as a defensive replacement that he won a Gold Glove for his efforts. Moore has started major league games at seven different positions, missing just pitcher and catcher. The 33-year-old signed a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training and will be paid $1.85-million should he make the major league roster.

Moore was a 7th round pick of the Rangers in the 2015 Draft and was then dealt to Atlanta late in the 2016 season. He then wound up in the Milwaukee organization before signing a minor league deal with Seattle in November of 2018. His MLB debut came with the Mariners in 2019 and he played with them until last August when he was released. He spent the rest of the season back with Texas before becoming a major league free agent following last season.

Moore’s defense has been his calling card. Moore has played most of his games at second base (205), but has played left field (154), shortstop (128), right field (108), third base (90), first base (49), and center field (17). He has performed well defensively with fielding percentages ranging between .991 and .965 at the six positions he has played most. In his 17 games in center field, Moore has a 1.000 fielding percentage in 105 innings. As for his arm, Moore has eight outfield assists in 279 outfield games.

Offensively, Moore, who bats right-handed, has played 689 MLB games with 63 home runs and 198 RBI while slashing .206/.310/.383/.693 with Seattle and Texas.

Signing Moore would give the Phillies two very versatile utility players if both he and Edmundo Sosa are on the roster. Sosa has a much better track record as a hitter, but Moore has him beat in how many positions he can play and how well he can play at a few of them. There have been whispers that the Phillies would like to add another starting pitcher and with the signing of Ranger Suarez, Boston has depth among starters. What Boston lacks is an infielder. Connecting the dots, a trade of Sosa to Boston for one of their starters would make sense for both teams.

The Red Sox are looking for a second baseman, which is where Sosa was best suited last season as a platoon partner with Bryson Stott. Sosa played 33 games at second with a .991 fielding percentage, which would fit perfectly for the defensive minded Sox. Sosa also played 33 games at third base where Boston figures to have rookie Marcelo Mayer. If Mayer were to struggle, Sosa could take over some time at third base, if needed.

One target is right-hander Brayan Bello, who at 26 has made 96 starts for the Red Sox with a respectable 4.09 ERA. Left-hander Patrick Sandoval is another pitcher that Boston has been shopping. While Bello is signed through 2029, Sosa is a free agent following the 2026 season. Sandoval underwent internal brace surgery — a form of Tommy John surgery — in 2024 and missed all of last season, but is set to return to the rotation this season. He is also a free agent following this season.

The Phillies released four minor league pitchers: LHP Erubiel Armenta, and right-handers Joel Heredia, Alex Rao, and Paxton Thompson.

Armenta pitched one game for Mexico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic and was then sidelined with what was described as elbow inflammation. As it turned out he needed Tommy John surgery and missed the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He returned last season and after four relief outings on a rehab outing with Clearwater he returned to Jersey Shore where he pitched in 21 games and in 21.1 innings, walked 17 and struck out 26, but posted a very respectable 3.38 ERA. He threw 3.1 shutout innings in the Mexican Winter League and is a likely roster member for this year’s Mexico team.

Heredia was 2-1, 4.32 in the Florida Complex League last season and struggled with his command issuing 15 walks and picking up 12 strikeouts in 16.2 innings of work. Rao underwent Tommy John surgery last March and has not returned to the mound. Thompson had a 5.59 ERA in 27 relief outings with Jersey Shore last inning.
