Ever since it was announced that J.T. Realmuto was coming back to the Phillies, some of the players on the 40-man roster bubble were hoping they would not be the one to be moved to make a spot for the veteran catcher. On Monday, utility player Weston Wilson was helping at a baseball clinic for about 50 kids at Citizens Bank Park, and Tuesday he was designated for assignment. Manager Rob Thomson was there as well; awkward!
Wilson was originally drafted by Milwaukee in the 17th round of the 2016 Draft and became a minor league free agent following the 2022 season and signed with the Phillies. Since then, Wilson has gotten familiar with the route between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia after being shuttled back and forth between the two sites. In that time he played 221 games with Lehigh Valley and 100 with the Phillies. Those trips used up all of Wilson’s options.
While 2025 – .198/.282/.369/.651 – was an ugly season for the 31-year-old, overall he put up decent role player numbers for the Phillies with a slash line of .242/.328/.428/.756 to go with nine home runs and 29 RBI in the majors. The biggest calling card for Wilson is his position versatility which includes first base, second base, third base, and both corner outfield spots.
The Phillies now have a week to put Wilson through waivers or trade him to another team. If he were to go unclaimed on waivers the Phillies would be able to outright him to the minors to serve as non-roster depth for the team.
