Well, this will be a little awkward. On April 28, 2021 left-hander Genesis Cabrera hit Bryce Harper in the face with a 97 mph fastball knocking the Phillies right fielder (now first baseman) out of the game. Guess who the Phillies just signed to a minor league contract? Cabrera, 29, pitched for four different MLB teams last season and will be in spring training with the Phillies on a minor league deal. After exiting, Harper missed four games before returning to the lineup. Cabrera also hit the next batter, Didi Gregorius with a pitch.
Cabrera made a total of 40 relief appearances last season with the Mets, Cubs, Pirates, and Twins, finishing the season with a 6.54 ERA. Cabrera started the year with the Mets and was designated for assignment, became a free agent, and signed with the Cubs. Less than a month, Chicago outrighted him to Triple-A Iowa and Cabrera again chose free agency and signed with Pittsburgh where he spent about six weeks before again being outrighted and electing to become a free agent. His final stop was with Minnesota where he made 16 appearances the most that he made with any team last season.
In his career, Cabrera has made 612 appearances, two of which were starts back in 2019. His career record is 17-15 and he has converted just six of his 17 save opportunities for a 35-percent conversion rate. His ERA 4.24 with a career WHIP of 1.37. In addition to the four teams he appeared with last season, Cabrera has also pitched with St. Louis and Toronto.
The Phillies have signed a number of relievers to minor league deals this offseason, including right-handers: Kyle Brnovich, Jonathan Hernandez, M.T. Morrissey, Colin Peluse, Trevor Richards, Levi Stoudt, Lenny Torres Jr., Bryse Wilson and left-handers Cabrera and Adam Seminaris. In addition to those signings, the Phillies have re-signed three right-handers; Gabriel Barbosa, Andrew Bechtold and Michael Mercado. In trades they acquired righty Jonathan Bowlan and lefty Kyle Backhus. Reliever Zach Pop recently signed a major league deal with the team as well. Right-hander Zach McCambley was selected in the Major League Phase of the Rule 5 Draft. And, don’t forget the reports that once the international signing period begins the Phillies will sign Alexandre Moreti.
