Nick Castellanos is still technically a member of the Philadelphia Phillies, but that hasn’t stopped the Phils from finding a replacement. Francys Romero of Beisbol FG reported Monday that the Phillies had agreed to a one-year, $10-million deal with outfielder Adolis Garcia. The reports has since been confirmed by Matt Gelb of The Athletic and Todd Zolecki of MLB.com.
Garcia was non-tendered by the Texas Rangers earlier in the offseason after a couple of down statistical seasons since he helped lead the team to a World Series championship in 2023. On their way to the championship, Garcia won the ALCS Most Valuable Player honors with his stretch highlighted by a walk-off home run in Game 1 of the ALCS. The 2023 season was huge for Garcia, who hit: 39-107-.245/.328/.508/.836 for the Rangers and in addition to being the ALCS MVP, Garcia also won a Gold Glove and became a two-time AL all-star.
In 2024, his average fell to a career-low of .224 (for any season in which he played in 25 or more games) and his on-base percentage fell over 40-points to .284 with his slugging percentage going from .508 down to .400 with Texas. His struggles continued in 2025 when he hit: 19-75-.227/.271/.394/.635 in 135 games. Those numbers were what led to the Rangers non-tendering him last month and making him a free agent.
Garcia has always been known as a ‘swing hard in case you hit it’ type of offensive player, but since 2021 when he was fourth in Rookie of the Year voting, but had an extremely high 31.7-percent strikeout rate, Garcia has cut his strikeout percentage to 24.7, just about two points above league average. He had pushed his walk rate up to 10.3-percent in his breakout year of 2023, but last season walked in just 5.1-percent of his plate appearances.
If Garcia can rediscover the power stroke he had in 2023, the Phillies will have found their right-handed power bat to put behind Bryce Harper in the lineup. If not, they are looking at getting basically the same production that they got out of Nick Castellanos last season.
Defensively, Garcia posted a .993 fielding percentage in right field, the highest among all AL right fielders. He also had six outfield assists in 2025. In his career, his fielding percentage in right field is .985. He also grades well in range among right fielders, something that the Phillies were missing with Castellanos.
Garcia’s name first became known in the Cuban National series where he became a standout player. He defected from Cuba in 2016 and played one season with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan’s NPB. From there he worked through the process to become an international free agent. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals prior to the 2017 season and made his MLB debut with the Cards in 2018. In December, 2019 he was traded to the Rangers in a cash deal.
