Two reports have the Phillies waiting to sign Japanese pitcher Alexandre Moreti once the International signing period opens next month. The X account @PhilsTailgate reported the signing first and it was confirmed by Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic. Varnes’ confirmation came in a larger story about the Phillies revamped Japanese scouting program. (The story is well worth reading and The Athletic is a must subscription for baseball fans.)

Moreti, whose full name is Alexandre Jun Yamauti Moreti, is a recent graduate of Homare High School in Komaki, Japan and is the son of Brazilian parents. Moreti represented Brazil in the U23 Pan American Baseball tournament. Moreti is an 18-year-old right-hander and will sign a minor league deal with the team on January 15 when the international signing period officially begins. Moreti checks in at 6′ 4″ and has reached 91 mph with his fastball as a high school pitcher. At the Pan American tournament, Moreti also put on an impressive offensive display, but there are no reports that the Phillies are considering him as a two-way player.

Phils linked to Japanese pitcher Imai

The Phillies made a foray into the Japanese pitching market last January, the Phillies signed pitcher Koyo Aoyagi, who had been posted by the Hanshin Tigers. Aoyagi made 2 starts and 17 relief appearances at Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season before being released with a 7.45 ERA with 23 walks and 16 strike outs in 19.1 innings of work.
