We could all use a trip to warmer climates right now. A tropical drink and some baseball sounds better than walking the dog in 30 degree weather when it’s already dark at 4:30 in the afternoon. I digress; let’s carry on:
Gigantes del Cibao
I should know better than to check in on outfielder Johan Rojas when he is anywhere other than the majors. The guy can hit. He just hasn’t translated it to the majors. In 95 at-bats with the Gigantes last season, Rojas hit .295 with a .382 OBP and 23 stolen bases in 23 attempts. This season he is hitting .333 (22-for-66) with the Gigantes and has 11 walks and 6 strikeouts on the season. His slash line is up to .436/.455/.891 with the only down note being that he has been thrown out twice in 12 stolen base attempts.
Phillies Outfield Dilemma: Where Does Johan Rojas Fit?
Rojas is 25, and the Phillies have reportedly let it be known that he is readily available in a deal. If he can’t put it together in the majors soon, he’s going to officially be an afterthought. Anyone else feel like he goes somewhere else and figures it out to become at least a good major league player?
Toros del Este
Felix Reyes, who the Phillies left exposed for next month’s Rule 5 Draft, is teammates with one of the new signees, Bryan De La Cruz. (For what it’s worth, it says here that the Phillies will lose Reyes in the draft.)
Reyes, 24, is playing in the Dominican Winter League for the first time and is having a tough season so far. Reyes was the Double-A Eastern League batting champion and league MVP in 2025. The powerful right-handed hitter has just 1 home run in 40 at-bats and is hitting .250 (10-for-40) with a .279 OBP. Maybe that will scare away teams from taking him in the Rule 5 Draft.
De La Cruz, who signed a minor league deal with the Phillies recently, is a Toros mainstay, playing in his sixth straight season for them. The outfielder, who turns 29 next month, is hitting .263 (21-for-80) with 3 home runs and 18 RBI in 20 games. His slash line stands at: .337/.413/.750 with the Toros.
