For the second night in a row, the Phillies lineup did not have Bryce Harper listed. Instead, Otto Kemp was playing first base and Alec Bohm was hitting third in the order. On another topic, Edmundo Sosa was activated from the 10-day IL and inserted in the lineup at shortstop, batting sixth. Another domino fell with Sosa’s insertion into the starting lineup as Bryson Stott, who had been playing at short shifts back to his normal position at second base.
To make room for Sosa, Donovan Walton was designated for assignment. Walton played two games with the Phillies and went 1-for-8 (.125) with an RBI. At Lehigh Valley this season, Walton hit .339 in 50 games after being acquired from the Mets who had Walton stashed at Triple-A Syracuse.
Also out of Wednesday night’s lineup was catcher J.T. Realmuto who left Tuesday night’s game after being hit by a foul ball in his throwing hand. He had initially stayed in the game after the injury, but was unable to grip a bat and was pinch-hit for by Rafael Marchan.
Harper has been down with an undisclosed illness and according to manager Rob Thomson, was going to be checked out by the training staff on Wednesday. Sosa went on the IL September 16th, but the move was retroactive to September 13 when he was suffered a right groin strain.
There is no immediate timetable for Harper’s return. The Phillies still have shortstop Trea Turner on the IL and the Phillies hope to be able to activate him Friday and have him available to play in the weekend series against the Minnesota Twins.
