Something that no team ever wants to see is their top offensive prospect laying on the ground in pain. The Phillies saw that Thursday night when leftfielder Justin Crawford was down on the third base warning track as was third baseman Otto Kemp. The pair had collided when they were chasing a pop-up, with both players going at full speed. Kemp’s shoulder hit Crawford squarely on the chin and Crawford stayed down on his side while Kemp got up and motioned for a trainer.
The end result was that Kemp was fine but Crawford suffered a couple of chipped teeth and a concussion. It was apparent that his mouth was bleeding as he was walked back to the dugout and into the clubhouse. There is no indication of how bad the concussion is or how long Crawford will be out. Crawford was officially placed on the 7-day IL with Lehigh Valley on Sunday, but may miss the upcoming road trip to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Lehigh Valley closes the season with a six-game homestand against the Syracuse Mets beginning on September 16.
At the time of the injury, which happened in the top of the first inning of Thursday night’s game against Toledo, Crawford had an eight-game hitting streak and was batting .417 (15-for-36) during that stretch.
